Big Tech workforce shake-up gathers momentum
The global technology industry is witnessing another round of workforce restructuring as major companies adjust their operations amid increasing investment in artificial intelligence. Microsoft has announced a voluntary exit programme potentially covering around 60,000 eligible employees, while Google has expanded voluntary buyout offers to selected employees in five countries. Meta, meanwhile, has acquired AI coding startup Conductor, a separate development in the competition for AI talent and technology.
Microsoft offers voluntary exits to around 60,000 employees
Microsoft announced its Voluntary Exit Offer on October 26, 2026, extending the programme to eligible employees in India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Reports say the programme could cover approximately 60,000 employees, representing more than a quarter of Microsoft's global workforce.
Eligibility is reported to be limited to employees at internal level 70 and below in participating business divisions. Participation varies by department, and not every Microsoft employee is eligible. The company has not disclosed how many employees are expected to accept the offer.
The approximately 60,000 figure represents potential eligibility, not confirmed departures. A voluntary buyout is not the same as a compulsory layoff.
Google expands voluntary buyout offers to five countries
Google has expanded its voluntary employee exit programme. According to Reuters reporting on November 4, the company confirmed that it began offering voluntary exit packages in June 2026 to selected employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland.
The programme builds on voluntary exit initiatives introduced by some Google teams in 2025 and earlier offers in parts of the United States and the United Kingdom. Google said the programme was intended to support its priorities as it prepares for the work ahead. The number of employees accepting the latest offers was not known.
Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor
Meta has also made a move in the AI industry, but it is not an employee buyout announcement. On November 4, 2026, Meta confirmed its acquisition of Conductor, an AI coding startup that helps software developers coordinate multiple AI coding agents working on different tasks.
Conductor's platform allows developers to manage multiple AI agents through separate workspaces. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The startup's founder and CEO Charlie Holtz announced that the company was joining Meta and indicated that the team was preparing a new interface for users, expected in early 2027.
Conductor said its existing cloud service would be discontinued, with its shutdown scheduled for November 20, 2026. Its local application is expected to receive support into early 2027.
