NATIONLIST INDIAINDIA & THE WORLD

India, the world, and stories worth knowing.

NationList India

Editorial Policy

These standards apply to everything published by NationList India, including news, explainers, fact checks, video and social media posts.

Accuracy

We check names, dates, figures and quotations against reliable evidence before publication. Statistics are attributed to their source and, where possible, linked to it. Headlines and summaries must be supported by the article beneath them.

Sourcing and attribution

We prefer primary sources: official documents, data, court records and people with direct knowledge. When we rely on another news organisation's reporting, we credit it by name.

  • Anonymous sources are used only when the information is important, cannot be obtained on the record, and the editor knows the source's identity.
  • We explain why a source has been granted anonymity where it helps the reader judge the information.
  • Social media posts are verified for authenticity and context before being reported as fact.

Fairness and right of reply

People and organisations facing serious allegations are given a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication, and their response is reported fairly. If they decline or do not reply, we say so.

Fact, allegation and opinion

We distinguish clearly between established facts, claims, allegations and analysis. Opinion pieces are labelled as opinion and carry the writer's name. Opinion writers are held to the same standard of factual accuracy as reporters.

Sensitive subjects

We take particular care with reporting on communal matters, crime, courts, suicide, children and victims of sexual violence. We do not identify survivors of sexual offences or minors in conflict with the law, and we avoid language or images likely to inflame tension. Accused persons are described as accused until a court rules otherwise.

Images and video

We use photographs we have the right to publish and credit them. Illustrations and generated images are labelled as such, and are never presented as a genuine photograph of a real event.

Use of AI tools

AI tools may assist with tasks such as transcription, translation or drafting. A human editor reviews every published item and is responsible for its accuracy. AI tools are not used as a source of facts.

Independence and conflicts of interest

Editorial staff must disclose any personal, financial or political interest that could reasonably be seen to affect their work, and step back from stories where a conflict exists. We do not accept payment in exchange for coverage.
