India and Poland have agreed to strengthen cooperation in defence, space and nuclear energy following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in New Delhi on Thursday. The discussions signal an effort to turn the countries’ strategic partnership into deeper industrial, technological and economic engagement.

Defence cooperation in focus

Defence is a key priority as India seeks to modernise its armed forces, strengthen domestic manufacturing and diversify industrial partnerships. Poland, a European Union and NATO member, is looking to expand its defence industry’s engagement with India.

Polish companies have shown interest in partnering with India on defence equipment, investment and potential joint development. Cooperation could create opportunities in technology transfer, industrial collaboration and manufacturing, depending on proposals and agreements taken forward by both governments.

Space and nuclear energy opportunities

Space technology is another area in which the two countries could explore collaboration, including satellite technology, research and commercial applications. Tusk’s visit includes engagement with business stakeholders in Bengaluru, a major Indian technology hub.

Cooperation in nuclear energy could broaden the relationship beyond conventional trade. Any future projects would depend on further discussions, technical requirements and applicable regulatory frameworks. The announcement of cooperation should not be interpreted as confirmation that specific nuclear projects or contracts have been finalised.

India-EU trade deal adds economic significance

The visit comes as India and the European Union pursue a free trade agreement that could reshape economic engagement between India and European markets. Modi said the agreement would further broaden India-Poland economic ties, according to The Economic Times.

Bilateral trade and investment are also central to the agenda. Business engagements in New Delhi and Bengaluru are intended to connect companies and identify opportunities for commercial cooperation.

Tusk’s visit builds on the strategic partnership established during Modi’s visit to Poland in August 2024. The next measure of progress will be whether diplomatic commitments lead to concrete defence, space, energy and trade initiatives.
