Uday Saharan’s unbeaten century helped Punjab recover to 269 for four against Chhattisgarh on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy match on October 18, after Shubman Gill’s return to the competition ended with one run from five deliveries.

Punjab’s captain finished on 106, giving the hosts a steadier position after an early collapse. Gill’s short innings attracted attention, but Saharan’s contribution and the partnerships around him became the defining feature of the day’s play.

The Elite Group B encounter is being played at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh. The score is a first-day position, not the result of the match.

Gill’s brief stay ends against Mandal

Gill came in at number four and was bowled by left-arm spinner Ajay Mandal. His dismissal left Punjab at 68 for three after the side had initially built a promising opening partnership.

According to the reported scorecard, Vihaan Malhotra contributed 40 and Harnoor Pannu made 20. Both openers were dismissed leg-before, leaving Punjab needing a substantial rebuilding effort rather than simply a quick acceleration.

For Gill, five deliveries offered little opportunity to establish rhythm. His return to domestic red-ball cricket came ahead of India’s New Zealand tour, but one short innings cannot by itself establish how he will perform in a different series or under different conditions.

Saharan and Prabhsimran rebuild

Saharan and Prabhsimran Singh added 130 for the fourth wicket, moving Punjab away from the immediate danger created by the early dismissals. Prabhsimran scored 62 before Dharmendrasinh Jadeja trapped him leg-before.

That partnership changed the shape of the innings. Punjab’s first three wickets had fallen in a short interval; the fourth-wicket pair then gave the batting side a prolonged period of stability and scoring.

The contrast is visible in the fall of wickets: Punjab moved from 68 for three to 198 for four. Rather than allowing the early pressure to become a much larger collapse, the pair made Chhattisgarh work through a sustained stand.

Arora helps Punjab close without further damage

Wicketkeeper-batter Salil Arora remained unbeaten on 38 alongside Saharan. Their unfinished fifth-wicket partnership added 71, taking Punjab to the close with six wickets still available.

Saharan’s innings included 13 boundaries. Match reporting described his use of the sweep against Chhattisgarh’s left-arm spin as an important part of the recovery, with Jadeja and Mandal carrying much of the bowling workload.

The published bowling figures gave Jadeja two wickets for 92 and Mandal two for 60. Those returns show that spin accounted for all four Punjab dismissals, although a scorecard alone cannot establish every aspect of the surface or the difficulty faced by the batters.

The match remains open

Punjab has recovered from a vulnerable position, but there is not yet a first-innings comparison. Chhattisgarh’s response will be needed before the value of the total can be judged properly.

The immediate opportunity for Punjab is to extend the partnership already at the crease. For the bowling side, an early breakthrough would expose the remaining batting and limit how far the hosts can build on their first-day recovery.

That makes Saharan’s continuing innings more significant than an isolated milestone. An unbeaten batter can carry knowledge of the bowling into the next session, but the overnight score offers no guarantee of further runs.

The day therefore leaves two separate stories: Gill’s unsuccessful return to the crease and Punjab’s successful recovery within the innings. Giving both their proper weight provides a fuller account than treating the entire team performance as an extension of one batter’s dismissal.
